Rachel Wingfield’s Environmentally Responsive Textiles
Yesterday’s post mentioned Rachel Wingfield’s Sphere toy. While trying to learn more about Rachel, we were really impressed by what we found. A graduate of the Royal College of Art, and now a senior lecturer in Design, Rachel is one of two co-founders of Loop.Ph, “a London based design and research studio that aims to bridge the gap between design and the natural sciences”.
Along with partner Mathias Gmachi, Rachel has earned a slew of awards. Particularly impressive is her LightSleeper project, an exercise in lighted bedding designed to help the body’s circadian rhythm stay in check. Based on sleep studies, Rachel determined that the body’s primary time to re-synch is during R.E.M. sleep, approximately 1 to 2 hours before waking.
“This is why light sleeper bedding gradually begins to glow in a natural breathing rhythm over a 15-20 minute period.”

And, if you happen to be in London over the next few weeks, be sure to swing by the Royal Botanical Gardens to check out her newest project, The Camalonian Columns.
