Help me decorate my walls!

walls

So I recently went through the hassle of growing up a little bit (isn’t that a pain?). Since moving into my first non-subletted apartment in NYC, I’d been suffering the indecency – along with the space-saving wonders – of a loft bed. Not the built-in, part of your apartment, well-designed loft bed, but the free-standing type that looks like a bunk bed without the bottom bunk. Needless to say, I felt like I was about ten every time I climbed the ladder at night. So that’s been replaced with a respectable, minimalist platform adorned by new bedding and squeezed in next to a smaller desk to make the room work.

Now I’m onto the next problem to solve: blank white walls. I have absolutely no decoration on the walls of my room which are stark white and about 12 feet high. I need something to spice the place up! Of course, being an avid wanderer of design sites and the like, I come across all sorts of goodies that fit the bill. The problem is culling down the choices to a reasonable collection. That’s where I’m hoping you all will give me a hand.

A few things that have caught my attention so far (feel free to make fun of the unoriginal pieces or suggest more original replacements):
-Ork Poster - I’m a fan of the Brooklyn print, though the newly released New York print is quite nice too
-Jordan Crane’s Poster Prints - His 26×40 prints might be a bit overwhelming, but a 13×20 could fit nicely. Question is which one?
-Blik’s Prose Wall Decals - Custom printed vinyl that says anything you want? Sounds spot on!
-Dylan Sisson Poster - His creepy, crazy characters are fantastic!
-The Hookmaker - from the Curiosity Shoppe, perfect for mounting behind the desk since I have no desk drawers
-Enamel letters from UrbanOutfitters - yeah, yeah, love ‘em or hate ‘em, Urban’s got a win on this one in my book
-Prints of some of my own photography - I have a ton of shots hidden away on flickr. And none on my walls. None.

That’s my list so far. I’m open to suggestions. I’m open to being completely shot down. What are your thoughts. HELP!

I Love all the black&white photographs you took. I was thinking maybe you could have all the photos print out in small format (like 2×3 or 3×4) , have lots lots repeats and tiled them up ( or puzzle them). Then you will ended up having a really cool poster for your wall. It’s labor intensive but It’s worth it!

Thanks Yuyu. I definitely need to get some of my photos up. Have to get around to getting them printed. The small prints idea is interesting. Have to keep that in mind.

Did you do the drawings in the first image in that album? Those are fun!

I’ve had a couple of responses to this post come in via alternative means, and I wanted to share them:

I cannot resist (long lineage of artists, interior designers and crafty people that I belong to)…

    1. Less is more
    2. Your own work is totally much more awesome than anything bought.
    3. Don’t overhang your walls; aka, don’t feeling the need to fill up white walls if u don’t want to or need to.
    4. Check out tapestries, cool vintage fabric as wall-hangings, or literally drawing on the walls is always interesting.

Personally I like it when a person’s place reflects them. It’s much more fun to share the space too, when it’s like a part of yourself!

    Hope that helped!
    Cheers,

A quick note on how to fill your walls:

I recently found myself in the same predicament. First I contacted all my designer/photographer friends and asked them if I could hanging there stuff on my walls. Then I also flat our contacted all the designers websites that I had stored in my del.icio.us and asked if they had extra prints or anything lying around that I could purchase from them — everyone’s a starving artist. The latter was actually pretty cool, and I found out that some of the random designers I had bookmarked were actually in the area. And one of them and I are actually in the process of putting together an art show for Not-so-starving Artists (basically a lot art director/designer wishes they were artsists - so why not put a show together).. but now everything is on hold since my job situation is in flux and I might be moving out of the state.

Anyway.. e-mail your friends and the people you admire and make them give you work. And then, if you can’t afford to frame it, steal some binder clips from the supply room.

I will give you a call soon. I’d love to continue to hear your thoughts.
